Day 151

It has been 151 days since I arrived in Ann Arbor.

Since I arrived in the United States,
I have sowed seeds, watered them and been watching them.
I have done everyday.
Sometimes it was rainy or snowing day.

I find something on the ground this afternoon.
It might be a small but precious shoot.

The shoot is a metaphor of my work.
I can't write the detail because it is a secret.
However it make me very happy.

Day 150

It has been 150 days since I arrived in Ann Arbor.

I went for dinner with some friends last night.

When I talked about somebody who was not there,
I called him his family name.
Then my friend asked why I called so.
That seemed unusual for him.
I felt a difference of culture (or nationality?).

Many Japanese call a person its family name or its post.
For example, students call their teacher only "teacher".
I also call my Japanese friend its family name.
So I wouldn't feel sad, if my girl friend called me my first name.

Day 149

It has been 149 days since I arrived in Ann Arbor.

I join a course of the chair man of my department this semester.
He is a funny man.
When someone pointed out his mistake on a black board,
he corrected the error and said "because it's Wednesday...".

This classroom is cheerful every time.

Day 148

It has been 148 days since I arrived in Ann Arbor.

Special lectures, called Ziwet lectures, are held this week.
I didn't join its first lecture today,
because I was tired from attending a weekly colloquium held before the lecture.

Anyway, when I had been rolling in my home,
a good idea had come in my head.
So I wanted to think this matter.
That was also why I didn't join the lecture.

Day 147

It has been 147 days since I arrived in Ann Arbor.

I went to the ANIMANIA January screening to watch Japanese animations last weekend.
I don't write details of the event, since it was too deep.
However let me write one thing.

There was a presentation for Japanese Mahjong at the break.
Japanese Mahjong is a board game using small tiles called mahjong-tiles.
Although I don't know the rule of it,
the presentation was so good to understand.
The hosts of the presentation seemed having studied the Mahjong hard,
who are Chinese and American.
(By the way, I don't know what a person living in the United States is called.
And I think this is subtle and difficult problem to define.)

It has been 144 days since I arrived in Ann Arbor.

The borders book stores are on sale now. Almost all items are 30% off.
The borders is the second-largest book store chain in the United States.
I find the fact in the wikipedia.
Then I also find a borders book store which is located near my apartment is the original one.
The picture of it in the wikipedia is just my neighborhood!

It has been 143 days since I arrived in Ann Arbor.

I couldn't find a ball-pen for supply in a supply room of my department.
I asked an office lady about it.
I didn't understand what she said completely.
But I realized that I couldn't get a ball-pen.

I felt sad because I like the design of that ball-pen.
Then she gave me her ball-pen!!

I made up my mind to give her something
which makes her happy someday.

I'm joining a class this semester.
The teacher of the class is the chairman of the department.
When I am searching his page on the Internet,
I find my name is on the list of the members in the department.
Furthermore, my name is above the professor's one on the list!

It has been 134 days since I arrived in Ann Arbor.

When I visited a store to get post cards,
I am called by a lady suddenly.
She says "You're welcome".
I haven't done anything for her.
So I am confused.

Then she points at a post card which I have.
The text on the post card says "Thank you!"

Day 133

It has been 133 days since I arrived in Ann Arbor.

The new semester has started since last Wednesday.
On this afternoon, I join a class for graduate students.
I have not joined classes in the last semester.
So this is my first experience.

It's a 50-time class,
which is shorter than usual one in a Japanese university.
However it is held three times in a week!
That's unusual in Japan!

Day 128

It has been 128 days since I arrived in Ann Arbor.

Let me write about taxies in the United States.
I used some taxies.
To go to the Detroit metropolitan airport,
I had made a reservation for a taxi by a mobile phone.
To my surprised, I should have paid a fee by a credit card before riding on it.
It means the fee is same price wherever I ride on it in Ann Arbor.

Day 127

It has been 127 days since I arrived in Ann Arbor.

On the Detroit metropolitan airport,
I went there at 28th Dec. 2009.
As you might know, a terrorist attempted bombing on a air plane visited to Detroit.
So I found many interviewers at the gate for international arrivals.
When I arrived there, a lot of Muslims was interviewed by news reporters.

As my friend said,
it was for an hour before landing
that passengers couldn't use blankets and go to a rest room.

Day 126

It has been 126 days since I arrived in Ann Arbor.

The last week in 2009, my friend visited here.
So I showed her all what I had seen in Ann Arbor.

In the United States,
there are neither o-misoka, which means the new year eve in Japan,
nor GANTAN, the new year day in Japan.
Of course, I didn't eat toshi-koshi soba and osechi.
Those are the ceremonious foods which Japanese eat in the new year eve and the new year day.

However, the Christmas decoration has continued until the new year day in Ann Arbor.
So we could see beautiful decorations.
